The Horrors Of Hunger- 20th Century Memoirs from Soviet Ukraine
May 16, 2023 Season 1 Episode 2
Maija Polsley

In the struggle for a free and independent Ukraine comes 20th century stories of inner strength and faith through harrowing years of horror, love, loss and sorrow, ultimately family redemption in the United States.

Born into the bourgeoisie sector of Imperial Russia, Nina Maknowich (maiden name)  comes of age just as Ukraine wins its 1000 year fight for freedom. Surrounded by eccentric family members and elites of the arts and sciences her world soon changes.  Celebrations turn into bloody massacres. Executions, exiles, man-made famines,  cannibalism and work camps pepper her days, months and years to come. Through three famines and three wars, her fight for survival is told through her memoirs.

Nina Sorochenko’s century-old memoirs of the life she experienced under Lenin, and then Stalin, are eerily prophetic of what Ukrainians experience today under Putin. Despite its history as a sovereign Republic, the dictators of Russia have always struggled to keep their ruthless treatment of Ukraine hidden through master manipulation, propaganda and brutal repression.

In this memoir Nina talks about the three famines she survived in Soviet Ukraine. The 1933 famine was created on purpose by Joseph Stalin. Over seven million Ukrainians died. The third was when Germany occupied Ukraine. She talks about the desperation leading to the unthinkable––cannibalism.
